Mayor of Lambeth opens Liz Atkinson Children's Centre in Mostyn Road

The Mayor of Lambeth Councillor Christopher Wellbelove today opened the Liz Atkinson Children's Centre in Vassall Ward.

The centre in Mostyn Road, SW9, part of the Surestart network, is an important new resource for children and parents in the local area. It provides a range of services include childcare, learning and development for children from birth to five, family support services, health and advice about employment.

The new centre is named in memory of Liz Atkinson, former Vassall Ward Councillor and Mayor of Lambeth in 2006 - 2007. She sadly died in January 2008 after a short illness.

The Mayor was joined for the opening by Liz's husband Richard Hardman, Vauxhall MP Kate Hoey, Lambeth Council Leader Councillor Steve Reed, Vassall Ward Councillor Kingsley Abrams and other Councillors including Paul McGlone, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People and Councillor Sally Prentice, Cabinet Member for Environment. All remembered the hard work Liz Atkinson did as Vassall Ward Councillor and as Lambeth Mayor.

Vassall Ward Councillor Kingsley Abrams commented "The naming of this centre is a fitting memorial to our friend Liz who worked so hard for the residents of Vassall Ward. A particular concern of Liz's was ensuring that the children and young people of Lambeth had the best start in life. This new centre will help to give this start so that the children can develop to their full potential."

More information on the centre is available on the Children, young people and families page of the Lambeth website
