Vassall Safer Neighbourhoods Team report 17% drop in crime on Paulet Road estate

Safer Neighbourhoods logoThe Vassall Safer Neighbourhoods Team (part of the Metropolitan Police) has reported a 17% drop in crime on the Paulet Road Estate in Vassall Ward in the six month period from July 2009 - January 2010 in which they implemented a dispersal zone in the area.

Local residents and councillors identified problems on the Paulet Road Estate (right) and brought them to the SNT's attention in 2009 at Panel meetings and in other public forums. Residents in particular reported being frightened as a result anti-social behaviour committed by young males in the vicinity.

In response to the concerns the SNT worked with Lambeth to implement a dispersal zone giving the Police powers to move on groups of young males (dispersal zones were introduced by the Labour government to give the Police powers specifically to tackle anti-social behvaiour such as this). As a result of the implementation of the dispersal zone between 27 July 2009 and 27 January 2010 there was a 17% drop in crime reported on the Paulet Road Estate compared to the previous six months. Local residents have reported feeling much safer. There are now plans to make the dispersal zone permanent so that the gains made continue to benefit local people.

Local resident and Vassall Ward Councillor Kingsley Abrams welcomed the reduction in crime saying "This is an excellent example of Lambeth Council and the local Police working together to tackle an identifed problem. I am very pleased that as a result of this action local people on the Paulet Road Estate can feel safer. Our aim in Lambeth is to build stronger, safer communities in Vassall Ward and across the borough."

He added "I would urge any Vassall Ward residents to contact me or the Safer Neighbourhoods Team directly with any low level anti-social behaviour or crime related problems they encounter - we will do our best to develop solutions to prevent the problems and make life better for everyone."
