Recycling on the estates across Lambeth, including those such as St Gabriels estate, Holland Rise House and Church Manor in Vassall Ward, has become a lot easier with the extension of the reusable orange bag scheme allowing recycling to be stored and carried easily and safely to the estate recycling bins. Over the next few weeks residents on the affected estates will receive a reusable orange bag for this purpose.
See the list of estates affected or for further information on recycling see the Lambeth website.
This initiative is part of Lambeth's new waste strategy, which came into effect on 4 April 2011. This aims to get everyone reducing the amount of waste they produce and increasing recycling as much as they can. Recycling levels have increased by nearly 5 per cent already and Lambeth is on course to exceed the target of saving £600,000 on waste disposal costs by an extra £300,000 by the end of this year.

Older residents visit Cowley food farm
On 21 July 2011 a group of older residents visited the Cowley food farm on the Cowley estate in Lambeth's Vassall Ward, SW9. A great time was had by all with an impressive barbecue and tours of the food farm by head gardener Drew Woodhouse (pictured left with Vassall Ward Councillor Adrian Garden).
There was a large turnout, and everyone enjoyed the afternoon despite the occasional rain shower.

Cowley food farm is a food growing initiative funded by Lambeth Council which aims to get people on the Cowley estate involved in gardening and growing food for themselves.
For further information see the Facebook page or contact Drew on 07817 543279 or email cowleyfoodfarm@gmail.com.

Myatts North redevelopment one step closer
Central government have approved Lambeth's plans for the redevelopment of the Myatt's Field North estate in Lambeth's Vassall Ward. The government carried out a vlaue for money review of the scheme and have now given it the green light. Work should be able to begin shortly.

As previously reported on Vassall View plans for the regeneration of the estate have been in development for several years.
Councillor Lib Peck, Lambeth's cabinet member for housing, said: “Residents have worked closely with the council to devise a scheme that will transform the estate bringing huge benefits to local people for generations to come. I am delighted that we have taken a major step forward with this scheme to allow work to begin on site for the transformation to begin.”
Viveen Blair-Rodney, chair of the Myatt’s North tenant management organisation welcomed the announcement saying “The life changing benefits that this PFI project will deliver means so much to this community. We have been involved since it began in 2004 and have worked very hard since then, giving up huge amounts of our time to try and secure better homes and a community that people want, and are proud to live in. It is now vital that we, as residents, have consistency and continuity as this exciting and life changing
project takes place”.
