Minet Library Reading Group's September book is We need to talk about Kevin

The Minet Library Reading Group meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the Minet Library at 52 Knatchbull Road, Camberwell, SE5 in Lambeth's Vassall Ward.  Every month the group meets for an informal discussion of the book of the month. The meetings take place from 6:30-8:30pm.

September 2011's book is We need to talk about Kevin by Lionel Shriver. Published in 2003 this book documents a mother's attempts to come to terms with a murder committed by her son. It received critical acclaim on publication winning the Orange Prize for Fiction. It will also shortly be released as a film.

At the time of writing several copies of We need to talk about Kevin were still available in Lambeth libraries so there is still time to get the book and read it before the meeting - check library book stocks on the Lambeth libraries web catalogue.

The Minet Library Reading Group meeting will take place at the Minet Library from 6:30-8:30pm  on Tuesday 20 September 2011. Follow the Minet Library on Twitter

A23 Brixton Road closed Northbound every night 15 - 27 August 2011

We have been informed by Transport for London that Brixton Road Northbound will be closed every evening from 8pm to 6am the following day for road resurfacing works. The works will take place over the next two weeks: Monday 15 - Friday 27 August 2011. As well as the road closures there is likely to be construction noise affecting local residents.

Buses and other traffic will be diverted up Clapham Road.

Full details from TfL:

A23 Brixton Road - Essential carriageway resurfacing works

Ringway Jacobs, on behalf of Transport for London (TfL), has been appointed to carry out essential carriageway resurfacing works on the A23 Brixton Road , between A203 Stockwell Road and A202 Camberwell New Road . These works will bring benefits to road users by renewing the existing road surface to eliminate cracks and pot holes. Upon completion, these works will also reduce the need for large scale maintenance of the carriageway for many years to come.

The works will be carried out from Monday 15 August to Saturday 27 August 2011 between 20:00 and 06:00hrs. During the works, A23 Brixton Road between A203 Stockwell Road and A202 Camberwell New Road will be closed to northbound traffic, however southbound traffic will be maintained. Northbound traffic will be diverted via A203 Stockwell Road and A3 Clapham Road .

TfL is firmly committed to minimising disruption to traffic; resurfacing the road overnight provides us with the best chance to complete these works as quickly as possible with as little disruption as possible. During the works, proposed diversion routes will be indicated via traffic signs.

Also note that the noisiest activities, such as breaking out and planing off the existing carriageway surface, will be carried out in the initial part of each night and aim to stop by 24:00hrs; the remaining works, such as laying and compacting the new surface and the associated road markings, will continue till 06:00hrs.

All stakeholders, including the London Borough of Lambeth, have been consulted and support our coordinated approach. In order to carry out these works we will require full access of the carriageway and therefore all parking will be suspended during the works. Your patience and cooperation would be greatly appreciated.

We anticipate moderate disruption to vehicular traffic and to mitigate this, we will have electronic Variable Messaging Signs (VMS) in the area to pre-warn drivers of these works.

Lambeth Labour politicians and party members help with Clapham clear up following disturbances

Vassall Councillor Adrian Garden with Councillor Mark Bennett and Lambeth Labour Party members on Vassallview.com

Lambeth Labour politicians and party members have got stuck in to the clear up following the disturbances in the Brixton and Clapham Junction areas.

Here Vassall Ward Labour Councillor Adrian Garden reflects "I toured Vassall ward yesterday and found everything quiet and peaceful, quite different from the mayhem further south round Brixton station. So in the afternoon I went to Clapham Junction - where in Northcote Road I came across a vast crowd of mainly young people attacking the road, the pavement, and the broken windows - with brooms, brushes and dustpans, black bags and rubber gloves. Far, far more than the few rioters and looters who had been there the evening before, these hundreds of people were the true face of the community, coming together."

Lambeth thanks volunteers for clear up after disturbances in Streatham and Brixton

Lambeth Council has thanked all the people who offered to help clear up after the disturbances in Brixton and Streatham on Sunday night.

Thousands of volunteers across London have been helping authorities clear up, with the efforts often coordinated through social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook.

Cllr Rachel Heywood, Cabinet member for Communities on Lambeth Council, said: “It’s been a very difficult few days, but the public spirit of local people who want to do something to help has been a fantastic reminder of the strength of community spirit in our borough."

“We’ve had lots of people spontaneously turning out yesterday and contacting us via Twitter to ask whether they could help with the clear up, and I don’t think there is any better indication of how much people care about Brixton and Streatham than that."

“The main clear up has now been done, but we suggest that people who still want to do something to help could speak to local shop owners to see whether they need any assistance. It’s also important to be thinking about neighbours and friends, particularly older residents who may be feeling vulnerable, and now is a good time to pay them a visit to check they are OK.”
