Lambeth thanks volunteers for clear up after disturbances in Streatham and Brixton

Lambeth Council has thanked all the people who offered to help clear up after the disturbances in Brixton and Streatham on Sunday night.

Thousands of volunteers across London have been helping authorities clear up, with the efforts often coordinated through social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook.

Cllr Rachel Heywood, Cabinet member for Communities on Lambeth Council, said: “It’s been a very difficult few days, but the public spirit of local people who want to do something to help has been a fantastic reminder of the strength of community spirit in our borough."

“We’ve had lots of people spontaneously turning out yesterday and contacting us via Twitter to ask whether they could help with the clear up, and I don’t think there is any better indication of how much people care about Brixton and Streatham than that."

“The main clear up has now been done, but we suggest that people who still want to do something to help could speak to local shop owners to see whether they need any assistance. It’s also important to be thinking about neighbours and friends, particularly older residents who may be feeling vulnerable, and now is a good time to pay them a visit to check they are OK.”
