Adrian (pictured left) commented "I am really pleased that this building is on track to open in the summer. The new Akerman Health Centre will offer a great new facility for the people of Vassall Ward and the surrounding area. This is a great example of how Lambeth and the NHS can work together for the benefit of everyone."

The new Akerman Health Centre will bring together three existing Doctors practices -Iveagh House, Foxley Square and Myatts Field- under one roof. It will offer a range of general medical services as well as services provided by partner organisations Guy’s and St Thomas’ Community Services, King’s College Hospital, South London and Maudsley Hospital and the London Borough of Lambeth.

Hackford Road to be transformed into Green Oasis

Work has begun on the transformation of Hackford Road, SW9 in Lambeth's Vassall Ward. The road will be transformed by the addition of trees and plants under a scheme being undertaken by Lambeth Council in partnership with local residents.

Hackford Road was formerly home to the artist Vincent van Gogh when he was in London in 1873-1874. Almost 140 years on now local residents are helping transform the area by creating a new ‘community play street’ dominated by people, trees and play facilities, instead of cars.

Trees such as Cypresses, Almond trees and lavender bushes featured in van Gogh's paintings will be planted, and a new children’s play area and benches will take the place of traffic in a pedestrianised Isabel Street.

Ccouncillor Nigel Haselden, Lambeth Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport welcomed the scheme saying “This is a really exciting scheme that will reclaim the  neighbourhood from traffic
and make it a place when people are the priority, where they can gather, play and socialise with their neighbours. When Van Gogh lived here he wrote that the neighbourhood was so peaceful that he regularly forgot he was so close to the centre of London- this scheme should bring back some of that tranquillity and peace and quiet."

Elaine Kramer, chair of neighbourhood group Streets Ahead, who lives in Morat Street, said: “I am really delighted to see the on-site start of this resident led transformation of the neighbourhood. It’s fantastic that our built up neighbourhood is being greened with trees and plants all referred to in van Gogh's paintings and will also be more pedestrian friendly. Our community street means neighbours will have a chance to meet each other and kids with no gardens will have a safe place to play.”

The photo shows construction work beginning on the scheme in Hackford Road. More information on the scheme can be found on the Grass Routes page of the Lambeth website

Stockwell residents call for a crossing on Clapham Road

Stockwell residents are calling for a new crossing to be installed on Clapham Road, SW9 from Albert Square to the new housing development in the former Freemans building in Vassall Ward.

The recent conversion of the old warehouse into flats and the opening of a new Tesco mean that more and more people are wanting to get across the road but face four lanes of, often fast moving, traffic.

Local residents have set up a petition calling on Transport for London to install a crossing on Clapham Road. In this they are supported by Lambeth and Southwark London Assembly Member Valerie Shawcross as well as Caroline Pidgeon, Liberal Democrat London Assembly Member who is Chair of the Transport Committee.

The call is supported by the Vassall Labour Councillors and Action Team members.

Rachel, a local Vassall Ward resident commented "I fully support these proposals. I often cross this road to get to Albert Square with my son in a buggy. We either have to go down and cross at the crossing near Stockwell Park Road or a chance on crossing through the often heavy and dangerous traffic. A road crossing would improve the area making it much more people friendly."

You can offer your support by

You can also support the campaign by writing individual letters to Transport for London at:

Do you know a Lambeth champion?

Lambeth Council are running a programme for Lambeth residents who work for the benefit of the area; the Lambeth Champions programme.

(taken from the Lambeth website)

If you know someone or a group of people that go that extra mile to make a positive contribution in the community or to be a good neighbour, nominate them for a Lambeth champion award.

Lambeth champions is a resident powered awards programme that celebrates the people you tell us have made a difference in your local area or to the improvement of life in Lambeth.

We believe these people should be recognised and thanked for their hard work, dedication and commitment to Lambeth. This is why we have launched the Lambeth champions awards.

The awards give you the power to tell us who you think are Lambeth's champions and allows us to make sure that these people are recognised and celebrated for what they do.

If you know someone who is a Lambeth champion please let the Council know.
