Myatts Field North redevelopment wins award

The Myatts Field North redevelopment in Lambeth's Vassall Ward has won an award for the design of the scheme.

The regeneration of the estate has begun and the £150million redevelopment is expected to be completed by 2017. The redevelopment will see over 800 new homes built.

Over the five year redevelopment the builders, Regenter, will
  • build 305 new homes to replace properties that are currently in a very bad condition
  • modernise and refurbish 172 existing homes
  • provide 146 new affordable homes
  • build 357 new homes for sale, 10% of which are full wheelchair access
  • create new streets, green spaces and play areas
  • provide a new landscaped park with a games area
  • build a new community centre
  • build a new energy plant to provide more reliable and efficient heating and hot water and substantially reduce the carbon footprint of the homes
  • refurbish commercial units and create a new local store
  • manage and maintain all the council houses and open spaces for 25 years.

Myatts Field North was announced as winner of the ‘projects’ award category of the Housing Design Awards on 20 June 2012.

The redevelopment will see Myatts Field remodelled to make it a more open, welcoming, and a greener environment. The Housing Design Awards is a national programme supported by the Government and the construction industry’s key professions drawn from planning, surveying, architecture, and house building. The Mayor of London’s housing advisor, Richard Blakeway, helped choose London’s winners.

Councillor Lib Peck, Lambeth council’s cabinet member for regeneration and strategic housing, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to see Myatts Field win such a prestigious design award – hopefully this will be the first of many. Our residents can look forward to living in an environment that will be completely transformed as well as benefit from new and improved homes."

She went on “We are grateful to the many residents who have worked with us over the years to ensure that the proposals are of the highest quality.”

Louise Brooke-Smith, RICS vice president, who handed out the award, said: “The collection of apartment blocks currently on this site at Myatts Field North are isolated from the cultural and economic activity of surrounding Kennington."

“In the new masterplan the new blocks are pushed out to the limits of the site, using a street layout that the area’s 19th century residents would have recognised.”

Vassall Ward celebrates the Diamond Jubilee

On Saturday local people in Brixton and Camberwell in Lambeth's Vassall Ward celebrated the Jubilee with two great events. Both events brought the whole community together to celebrate the start of the summer and the Queen's 60 years on the throne.

Cowley fun day
On the Cowley estate (off Vassall Road, SW9) there was a huge fun day, with music, free food (including some tasty burgers) and a range of events for kids, including some local representatives from Fulham Football club.

The event was put on by the local Cowley Estate Management Board. Vassall Action Team member Annie Gallop lives on the estate and will be happy to talk to anyone interested in getting more involved, so do email her at Vassalllabour@gmail.com if you want a chat as well.

Myatt’s Fields Park Jubilee Summer Fair and Big Lunch

Meanwhile a few streets away Myatt’s Fields Park in Calais Street, SE5 was thronging with crowds on Saturday attending the Jubilee Summer Fair and Big Lunch. The crowds were able to hear music on the bandstand (pictured), watched dancing from a swing patrol, remember the 1950s in the memory tent and buy plants and other items from various stalls. In addition there was a cake competition for the best Jubilee cake.

Children enjoyed fairground rides, ice creams and the park facilities.

Participants were invited to sit down together in a 'Big Lunch' with free food provided by Food Heroes, a group based in the park.

Some pictures of the event have been sent in by Paul Gadsby, a member of the Vassall Action Team, who was volunteering on the day.

Do you have any photos of the weekend? We would love to feature them here -  we want to build a picture of Vassall over the Jubilee weekend. Send your pics through to Vassalllabour@gmail.com
