Vassall Ward celebrates the Diamond Jubilee

On Saturday local people in Brixton and Camberwell in Lambeth's Vassall Ward celebrated the Jubilee with two great events. Both events brought the whole community together to celebrate the start of the summer and the Queen's 60 years on the throne.

Cowley fun day
On the Cowley estate (off Vassall Road, SW9) there was a huge fun day, with music, free food (including some tasty burgers) and a range of events for kids, including some local representatives from Fulham Football club.

The event was put on by the local Cowley Estate Management Board. Vassall Action Team member Annie Gallop lives on the estate and will be happy to talk to anyone interested in getting more involved, so do email her at Vassalllabour@gmail.com if you want a chat as well.

Myatt’s Fields Park Jubilee Summer Fair and Big Lunch

Meanwhile a few streets away Myatt’s Fields Park in Calais Street, SE5 was thronging with crowds on Saturday attending the Jubilee Summer Fair and Big Lunch. The crowds were able to hear music on the bandstand (pictured), watched dancing from a swing patrol, remember the 1950s in the memory tent and buy plants and other items from various stalls. In addition there was a cake competition for the best Jubilee cake.

Children enjoyed fairground rides, ice creams and the park facilities.

Participants were invited to sit down together in a 'Big Lunch' with free food provided by Food Heroes, a group based in the park.

Some pictures of the event have been sent in by Paul Gadsby, a member of the Vassall Action Team, who was volunteering on the day.

Do you have any photos of the weekend? We would love to feature them here -  we want to build a picture of Vassall over the Jubilee weekend. Send your pics through to Vassalllabour@gmail.com

Myatt's Fields Park is situated in Camberwell: between Calais Street, Cormont Road and Knatchbull Road, SE5 in Vassall Ward in Lambeth.  Further information is available on the Myatt's Fields Park Project Group website
