Three local Doctors practices have now moved to the new location: Iveagh House Surgery, Foxley Square Surgery and the Myatts Field Medical Practice

In addition health, community and dental services will be provided at the Akerman Health Centre as well as the care of long term conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, and access to mental health services, including a specialist outreach service. It will be the main base for district nursing and specialist maternity services for people in Brixton.

Akerman Health Centre on Patmos Road on Vassallview.comLocal GP and chair of the NHS Lambeth Clinical Commissioning Group  Dr Adrian McLaughlin commented  “The great strength of the Akerman Health Centre will be its bringing together under one roof of the healthcare and social care services that people living and working in Lambeth will need to stay well and healthy.  We hope that the centre will also bring shorter waiting times and better access to services for patients.  For us as clinical commissioners, reducing inequalities and improving healthcare for local people is a priority, and the Akerman Health Centre will go some way to achieving this.”
Funding for Akerman Health Centre was provided through the Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT) programme. This is a public private partnership between Building Better Health, a private sector development partner set up in 2003 to bid for NHS LIFT projects in Greater London, and the NHS in Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham. It provides funding for brand new health and social care facilities which are then leased to the public sector, including NHS organisations and GPs.

Lambeth consults on new council tax support scheme

Lambeth are currently asking local residents about how they want the new council tax support scheme to operate.

The Government is abolishing council tax benefit which is given automatically to people on low incomes to cover the cost of paying the council tax.

From April 2013 the responsibility for helping people on low incomes pay their council tax will be shifted to councils so Lambeth will have to decide who will be eligible for help with their council tax. Disguised under the veneer of increasing power to councils, this change also sees a 10% reduction in grant funding for this benefit - this means that Lambeth needs to raise an extra £2.6million to make up for the funding lost. This will result in more people on lower incomes having to more council tax each year.

Although claiming that the change will allow councils flexibility central government have insisted that older people are not affected. This means that the rest of the population will see around a 20% cut in their council tax benefits which equates to roughly £5 per week or £250 per year.

Nationally this change in polcit will result in a saving of £500m a year for the coalition Government - a drop in the ocean of the total debt. The impact on families will be great with the increased cost of council tax likely to lead to increased rent arrears, repossessions and homelessness. This will bring costs to society which will more than likely wipe out any predicted saving. The impact on local communities will be great too - that £5 extra a week used to pay council tax will not be spent in local shops and services.

Local authorities have until January 2013 to devise their new schemes for implementing this new system.

Lambeth are asking local residents for suggestions on how the new system should be implemented - should certain vulnerable groups be protected? At what level of income should someone have to start paying full council tax? Should working people receive more or less benefit? The answers you give to these and other questions will help shape the new scheme. To take part in the consultation complete the short questionnaire on the Lambeth website or contact the council for a paper version - call 020 7926 6038 or email benefitsinfo@lambeth.gov.uk. The consultation closes on 19 October 2012 so be sure to have your say before then.

Work begins on Myatts Field North regeneration project!

You may have noticed that construction has started in Myatts Field North as part of a £150 million Myatts Field North redevelopment scheme backed by Lambeth Labour.
Despite cuts and delays by the Lib Dem and Tory government, the project is finally underway with its mission to bring better homes, more jobs and new modern facilities to local residents. Here is what this exciting project will mean for our area.

What does the redevelopment mean … for residents?

The project will see the refurbishment of 172 properties, while 305 will be rebuilt from scratch to give residents new homes for them and their families. All current residents on the estate will be able to move to their new or refurbished homes on the same contracts as they currently have.  A further 503 houses and flats will be built, including 146 set at affordable prices.
The redevelopment will also seek to create public areas that everyone in Vassall can enjoy. This will include a new park with games and play areas for young people, and a modern community centre and local store. It will be a green redevelopment as well, with a pledge to cut carbon emissions by 80% for the area.
The project is scheduled to be finished in 2017 and local community members are involved in monitoring the implementation of the contract through a resident’s forum. For more information about this get in touch with the Council’s Client Team on 020 7926 8315 or at MFN@lambeth.gov.uk.

What does the redevelopment mean … for jobs?

In order to give local jobs a boost, a set of refurbished commercial units will be put in place to attract businesses to the area. The project is also aiming to fill at least 50 per cent of jobs on the project with local residents. The opportunities include 12 management traineeships, 18 apprenticeships and 16 mentoring placements with one of the consortium partners.
If you’re interested in any of these position or other job opportunities get in touch with the client team.

How do I find out more?

Despite all the good things that this development will do, Vassall Labour has been campaigning for better communications to residents from the developers, Regenter, following feedback we have had from local people. Thank you to those of you who have been in touch and have been keeping the pressure on/
We hope this update has helped give you more detail, but if you have any other feedback, complaints or questions send them straight away to the Council’s Client Team on 020 7926 8315 or at MFN@lambeth.gov.uk or directly to Regenter’s Resident Advisor on 0800 317 066.
