Join the Energy Bill Revolution

Are you worried about your next winter fuel bill? Is this more of a worry this year than last year?

Millions of families in the UK are struggling to heat their homes, with an increasing number having to choose between buying food and switching on the heating, or wearing hats and gloves indoors to keep warm. Cold homes damage people’s health – and lead to needless deaths – especially in the winter. Those who are more vulnerable, such as children and the elderly, suffer the most. In Vauxhall, more than 4,000 households are in fuel poverty, around 10% of all people living in the area

There is an answer to this problem. The Energy Bill Revolution is campaigning to lower everyone’s fuel bills and end cold homes. It is an alliance of 120 organisations calling on the Government to make our homes cheaper to heat and more comfortable to live in – with a real focus on those who struggle hardest to heat their homes. From next year the Government will even have a new source of money to pay for this as new policies increase the amount of our fuel bills that are paid to the Treasury.

But this won’t happen without your help. The Government needs to hear from all of us that this is a spiralling problem that must be tackled now. Please support the campaign by signing the petition at www.energybillrevolution.org – and ask your family and friends to do the same. Local Labour MP Kate Hoey has already given her support to this plan.

People shouldn’t have to live in cold homes and worry about their family’s health over the winter. Working together we can have warm homes and affordable bills for all.

‘PayByPhone’ and park for free in Lambeth on 21 and 22 December

Lambeth council has announced that shoppers looking for last-minute Christmas presents are being offered free parking in Lambeth on 21 and 22 December if they use the PayByPhone service. Free parking will apply to all pay and display and shared use pay and display bays (not including suspended bays) for motorists registered with the scheme.

PayByPhone was launched a year ago in Lambeth and almost 40,000 residents are now using the scheme as a quick, easy and secure way to park across the borough. Once motorists have registered their details they can use the PayByPhone service to park across the UK wherever they see the PayByPhone sign.

Cllr Imogen Walker, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, said:

“Lambeth’s PayByPhone scheme has made parking easier for motorists across Lambeth by reducing the need to hunt for change to feed the meter. Registering with PayByPhone is really easy, you can do it online, by text, over the phone or by downloading the PayByPhone app for your mobile.

“With only a few shopping days left before Christmas, it’s the perfect time for residents to make the most of free parking on the 21st and 22nd December to pick up a present in Lambeth’s fantastic range of shops and markets.”

Transport for London outline plans for changes to P5 bus route

Transport for London have outlined plans for changes to the P5 bus route as it passes through Vassall Ward in Lambeth.

TfL bus route P5 travels from Elephant and Castle to Brixton and Clapham before heading on to Nine Elms and Vauxhall. It is valued for its convenience as it largely travels along back roads close to where people live.

As we outlined on Vassall View in 2009 TfL would like to return the bus service to its original Southbound routeing taking it along Langton Road and Lothian Road, SW9 (see map, left) rather than Flodden Road, Knatchbull Road and Lilford Road, SE5.
Proposed new route for P5 bus on vassallview.com

TfL argue that the restoration of the original route brings the bus closer to more people living on the Myatts North estate, and on Akerman, Lothian and Langton Roads.

The new route will not be as convenient for people using Myatt's Fields Park or the Minet Library which will be a further walk from the bus stops.

TfL want to know what you think - letters and further information has been distributed to households in the area around Knatchbull Road - you can have your say by filling in the consultation questionnaire on the TfL website where you can find further information. The closing date for submission of responses is 11 January 2013.

Durand Gardens improved street lighting

During a recent mobile surgery, we received some positive feedback about recently improved street lighting in Durand Gardens area, which was put into place by Lambeth's Labour council.

Despite Tory and Liberal Democrat cuts to policing, we are keen that this new street lighting contributes to a safer environment for residents, their family and friends.

If there are any issues with crime generally please get in touch with Vassall Labour on vasslllabour@gmail.com or Councillor Adrian Garden on 07814568024

Building works on Clapham Road

A number of residents raised concerns during our recent mobile surgery about the impact of building works to one property on Clapham Road, near the entrance to Durand Gardens, especially its effect on public pavements and access.

Following on from these concerns, your local Labour team requested a site visit by Lambeth’s Building Control Team on 22 October. They carried out an investigation of the area and found that there was no danger to the public, although there was damage to surrounding footpaths that the local highways agency is now working to rectify.

We do want to keep a close eye on this development so that no issues emerge in the future. If you have any concerns please contact Cllr Adrian Garden on agarden@lambeth.gov.uk or 07814568024
