Changes to rubbish and recycling collections in Vassall Ward over Christmas

Over the Christmas period there will be changes to the usual weekly rubbish and recycling collection days owing to the bank holidays.

If your rubbish is normally collected on a Monday or Tuesday there is no change. Owing to the Christmas day bank holiday rubbish normally collected on Wednesday will now be collected on Thursday and Thursday and Friday's collections will also be shifted back a day. This pattern will also be repeated the following week.

Paul Gadsby to stand as Labour's candidate for the Vassall by-election

Labour has selected local Lambeth resident Paul Gadsby as their candidate for the Vassall council byelection on Thursday 28 November.

Paul, who lives on South Island Place, is an active local community campaigner who has been a member of the local Labour action team for the last 18 months.  During that time he has pioneered Labour's rolling surgeries which have visited resident's across Vassall to talk to them about their issues and concerns.

This has included working with other community activists and groups to put together a meeting which sought to support those suffering from the impact of the Tory-Lib Dem government's cuts and promote responsible banking.

Paul has also helped lead on a variety of local campaigns with his fellow council candidates for the 2014 council elections, Jacqui Dyer and Annie Gallop, from road resurfacing and housing petitions to large scale surveys of key estates like Myatt's Field North and the Cowley estate. He has also helped to organise a series of coffee mornings that put elected representatives in front of local people.  Paul has been a regularly attendee and volunteer at community organisations across the borough.

Talking about his selection, Paul said:

"I am really delighted to have been selected by Vassall Labour members for this byelection.  I have enjoyed working in this fantastic community in the last few years, whether its been volunteering on the food stands at the Jubilee celebration at Myatts Park, helping residents with local projects and their community groups or getting stuck in to sorting out individual problems for residents.

"I know that a lot of people are suffering badly at the moment, especially from out of control energy bills and other pressures on their finances, and that they need a committed councillor that will fight for them. I am looking forward to the campaign and, if elected, being a representative for this great area. "

Kate Hoey, MP for Vauxhall said:

"I am really delighted that we have such a strong team of Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop working in Vassall and providing a strong voice for residents.

"Paul will make an excellent, vocal councillor for local people and I will be working hard for his election on Thursday, 28 November."

If you are interested in helping out with the campaign, please do send us an email at vassalllabour@gmail.com

Labour Action Team listen to residents' concerns across Vassall Ward

The Vassall Labour team regularly carries out 'rolling' surgeries where we go out and talk to people around the area to find out their concerns, complaints and (occasionally!) praise for the council.

During September our team visited a number of streets, including Foxley Road and Caldwell Street, as well as the parts of Clapham Road, South Island Place and Camberwell New Road that fall within Vassall ward.

A host of different issues were thrown up during these surgeries, from personal concerns caused by the government’s welfare changes (more information about the welfare changes here) and other more street specific topics.

Below is a summary of some of the queries raised with us by residents and how we have attempted to address them.

If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact your local Labour council candidate team – Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop – at vassalllabour@gmail.com.

Street cleaning
Residents on all of the streets listed above mentioned that they were concerned about the cleanliness of their roads, especially the amount of litter. We have spoken to the street cleaning department at Lambeth council and asked them to ensure that this problem is addressed. If you have problems with the state your roads, please do contact Lambeth council’s Streetcare service on 020 7926 9000

Tree pruning on Camberwell New Road
With the autumn approaching, residents on Camberwell New Road raised concerns about a number of overgrown trees and how large numbers of leaves were causing some roads to become slippery and dangerous. We have asked for the council to look at pruning a number of trees in the area in the next few months.

State of the drains on Camberwell New Road
A number of residents raised concerns about the problems with drains on the street particularly that they overflow during heavy rain and occasionally cause a strong smell during the summer. We have written to Thames Water asking them for an explanation as to why this problem hasn’t been solved and for them to keep residents better informed about their work on the road. We are still waiting for a response to this letter, but please keep an eye on www.vassallview.com for further updates.

The meeting will be discussing a variety of issues, including the installation of new bathrooms and kitchens as part of Lambeth’s housing improvement scheme, and approaches to parking and estate maintenance.

All residents from these areas are welcome to attend.

Labour team listens to concerns of residents on the streets off Knatchbull Road

The Vassall Labour team regularly carries out 'rolling' surgeries where we go out and talk to people around the area to find out their concerns, complaints and (occasionally!) praise for the council.

At the end of August and the beginning of September, the team visited residents along the streets off Knatchbull Road, including Penford Road, Templar Street, Upstall Street, Welby Street and Inglis streets in Vassall SE5 (have a look at the ward map here).  Following on from a number of concerns about particularly parking and rubbish collection, the team organised two “walkabouts” with a Lambeth cabinet member and council staff to address a number of specific issues.  Some of the concerns raised with Labour's council candidate team - Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop - are listed below, along with the actions they are taking to address them:

Parking issues

A number of residents raised concerns about various parking matters, including cars being parked without up to date tax discs and vans blocking parts of the streets, especially on Templar and Penford streets. We have been in touch with Lambeth council who will be sending traffic wardens to check the area for illegally parked cars in the coming months. This has already resulted in one abandoned car being scheduled for removal by council staff.

Resurfaced roads and pavements
As residents on Inglis Street and Templar Road will hopefully have seen, their roads are due for resurfacing following a successfully petition last year from the local Labour team. We have noted residents concerns about the state of other roads, particularly Welby Street, and will be passing that onto the council for them to consider for the next round of road resurfacing.

Burglar arrest
We have contacted the local police about some of the recent crimes in the area, particularly a spate of burglaries. They have informed us that a burglar was recently arrested in part due to evidence from the CCTV camera on Templar Street and that in the past month there has been a drop in crime in the area following a focus by local police. Thanks to the feedback from one resident, we have confirmed that the Templar CCTV camera is being partly obscured by an overgrown tree which we are now asking to be pruned.

Bins in the area
Several residents were concerned about overflowing bins in part of the area and about the impact of the closure of a communal bin on Paulet Road which is resulting in more rubbish being dumped on surrounding streets. We are in discussion with the council about this issue, but if you live in the area do send us your views about the cleanliness of the area.

If you have any further issues your want to discuss with us or want join the local Labour mailing list, please contact your candidates for the 2014 council elections, Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop on vassalllabour@gmail.com

Pothole petition success - local roads set to be resurfaced this year!

Last year your local Labour team started a petition aimed at sorting out the worst pothole problems afflicting a number of streets in our area. After presenting the pothole petition to the council, signed by residents across the community, Lambeth council has agreed to resurface these roads in the autumn:

Cancell Road
Russell Grove
Evandale Road
Inglis Street
Templar Street
Lothian Road

Pleasingly Mowll Street, which had some particularly deep potholes, has already been resurfaced. All of the works are being carried out as part of a £10 million Lambeth Highway Improvement programme that is
being funded by the sale of redundant office blocks. This will mean over a hundred roads or pavements in Lambeth will be re-laid, leaving streets looking smarter and making life easier for cyclists, motorists and pedestrians.

We are delighted that the pothole campaign has been a success and wanted to thank all those who signed the petition!

We are aware though that other roads in the area also need resurfacing and we will be looking at how we can help to make this happen in the future, within the current tight funding constraints all councils are facing. One of the roads we did campaign for, Cowley Road, is not being resurfaced in the immediate future owing to the ongoing works around the Myatt's North estate which would have made resurfacing difficult.

If you have any feedback about this decision, want to talk about other issues in your local area or join the local Labour mailing list, then please contact your candidates for the 2014 council elections, Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop on vassalllabour@gmail.com. Alternatively you can contact your local Labour councillor Adrian Garden on agarden@lambeth.gov.uk and 07814 568 024.

Labour team listens to concerns of residents on Loughborough and Lilford Roads

The Vassall Labour team regularly carries out 'rolling' surgeries where they go out and talk to people around the area to find out their concerns, complaints and (occasionally!) praise for the Council.

At the end of July, the team visited residents along the parts of Liflord and Loughborough Road inside Vassall ward (have a look at the ward map here). Some concerns that residents raised with Labour's council candidate team -  Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop - are listed below, along with the actions they are taking to address them:

Bar on Loughborough Road

A number of residents raised concerns about the noise levels from the Xperience bar on Loughborough Road, especially late at night. We have written to Lambeth’s licensing department asking them to look into the issue as soon as possible. It is important that residents let Cllr Adrian Garden know of any specific times and dates when the noise from the club is causing a nuisance, you can contact him on agarden@lambeth.gov.uk

General state of streets and council properties in the area

We are currently following up individual queries from residents about the state of their properties. If you have any queries about your home or the state of local streets, please do get in touch with your Labour team at vassalllabour@gmail.com. Road resurfacing for Lilford Road is scheduled for 2013/14 and Loughborugh Road some point after that.

Controlled Parking Zone

Several residents raised issues about the difficulty of getting parking in the area. We have raised this repeatedly with Transport for London, especially about the possibility of having a controlled parking zone at times most useful to local residents. The next consultation on this issue will be in 2014 and we will keep you informed about this issue in the future.

Do you need help?

If you have any issues you want the local Labour team to look into on your behalf, or have feedback about your local area, you don't have to wait for us to turn up on your doorstep! You can contact Cllr Adrian Garden on agarden@lambeth.gov.uk or our council candidate team address on vassalllabour@gmail.com

New project aims to get unemployed young people involved in improving the local area

An exciting new project has been established in Loughborough Junction which aims to improve the local area by offering opportunities for local young people to gain skills through volunteering.

Interjunction is a not for profit scheme that hopes to place 100 young NEET (not in education, employment or training) young people aged 16-25 into really exciting volunteering roles in the local community.

Its aim is firstly, to give young people the skills and experience necessary to succeed in future employment, and secondly, the regenerate the Loughborough Junction area by getting local people involved in local projects.

Young people from the Loughborough Junction area can volunteer anywhere in Lambeth or young people from Lambeth can volunteer in the Loughborough Junction area.

Young people will be placed within Kids' City projects and within other suitable organisations in Lambeth.

The idea of the project is to regenerate the Loughborough Junction area by increasing the amount of volunteering going on in the area and improving the skills of young people in the area.

If you are involved in a local voluntary organisation or community facility this is an ideal opportunity to get some extra help or develop a new area of work. If you are a young person or know of a young person who would benefit from gaining skills and experience sign up now.

London Open Squares weekend

This weekend, 8 and 9 June 2013, is the London Open Squares weekend when a variety of community gardens and private squares around London will be open for visitors. Many Lambeth gardens will be open including Durand Gardens in Vassall Ward, Lambeth SW9.

Durand Gardens on the Open Squares website
The London Open Squares website describes the gardens: "Durand Gardens are an unusual D-shaped space in the Stockwell Park Conservation Area. The shape of the garden is said to be derived from its being the site of a plague pit. The area was developed from around 1840 to 1870. The houses were built around the garden on a pattern-book system in a wide variety of styles.

The gardens themselves were neglected for many years until the residents bought them in the 1980s. Since then they have been kept as woodland gardens and are at their best in the spring, with large displays of bluebells and daffodils. The main group of trees are limes and oaks, with a scattering of specimen trees amongst them. The central grass area is a delightful spot for a picnic.

There is now a residents' scheme to develop a wider season of plant and tree display. An exhibition will explain the history and plans for the site."
