Campaigners declare victory as rail services from Loughborough Junction to St Pancras and beyond saved

Campaigners have welcomed the announcement by the Government that trains from Loughborough Junction station on Coldharbour Lane will continue to serve Farringdon, St Pancras, West Hampstead and other stations North of London on the Thameslink line.

Network Rail announced in summer 2008 that services on the so called Wimbledon loop line, which serves Herne Hill, Tulse Hill and Streatham as well as Loughborough Junction,  were to terminate at Blackfriars following the redevelopment of the station.

This move would have inconvenienced local Vassall Ward residents, many of whom catch the train from Loughborough Junction to travel to work in the city and to the North of London. Following the announcement a cross-party campaign developed to oppose the proposal supported by Lambeth Labour MPs, Lambeth Councillors, the Lambeth and Southwark London Assembly Member Valerie Shawcross and many others from across South London. More than 2,000 letters were submitted to Network Rail opposing the proposal. As a result of pressure from local people Network Rail have had a change of heart and so the train services are safeguarded.

Lambeth produce booklet advising on how to keep warm and save money

Warmer homes leaflet frontcover image

Lambeth Council's benefits advisory service and NHS Lambeth have produced a new booklet offering advice on how to stay warm in winter and save money. It is aimed at everyone but especially those who are on lower incomes such as older people who may worry about the costs of heating their homes.

The booklet (left) is being issued as part of the Warm and Well in Winter partnership project between the London Borough of Lambeth, NHS Lambeth Clinical Commissioning Group and Age UK Lambeth. The project aims to reduce winter mortality by raising awareness throughout the whole community; however our target groups are older people and those with long term medical conditions. Every winter, as many as 25,000 older people die needlessly because of the cold.

The booklet is available to download on the Lambeth website or paper copies can be picked up from the following locations in the borough

Boris puts fares up again

As many of us will have realised when we returned to work today after the Christmas break fares on the buses, Underground, DLR, trams and trains have increased.

Image of an Oyster Card on vassallview.com
On the buses and trams Boris has increased the cost of single fares from £1.35 to £1.40. On the Underground, rail and DLR fares have gone up between 10p and 40p if you use Oyster pay as you go (similar increases are also being seen for cash fares).

For residents of Vassall Ward this means that it now costs £2.80 to travel to central London from Brixton, Stockwell or Oval tube stations at peak times and £2.10 if travelling off-peak.

If travelling by train the fare from Loughborough Junction to central London has increased to £2.40 peak (£2.10 off-peak).

London Labour has warned that under Boris this is only the start and we face many more years of above inflation fare increases. Lambeth and Southwark Great London Authority Member Valerie Shawcross commented "Under Boris, Londoners are now facing another 10 years of above-inflation fare rises. We have already seen fares go up above inflation for the last five years. The Mayor needs to realise that Londoners are struggling, it is time he reined these inflation-busting fares in."

Full details of the 2013 fares are on the Transport for London website
