To celebrate there will be music, drink and food as well as a chance to walk around the new area. In addition Lambeth's Dr Bike team will be on hand with cycle mechanics offering basic bike repairs and advice.

The initiative has come about through a partnership between Lambeth Council and local group Streets Ahead (first featured here in February 2012) and is inspired by the Dutch 'home zone' model where the needs of local residents, pedestrians, cyclists and children are prioritised over the needs of cars.

This aim is to make a pleasant street where people want to be rather than somewhere merely to pass through. Lambeth has worked with the local people to close the road at one end and create a usable community shared space through the use of trees, planters, public art, a basket ball hoop and signage to signal to drivers that it is a street for people not solely for cars. The works were paid for by Lambeth’s Local Implementation Plan, and Section 106 planning gain funding.
