Vassall Action team launch petition calling for improvements on Caldwell Gardens Estate, SW9

The Vassall Labour Action team have launched a petition calling on Lambeth Council to bring forward plans to invest in the Caldwell Gardens Estate, SW9 in Lambeth's Vassall Ward.

Caldwell Estate Repairs Petition
Last month your local Labour team visited the Caldwell Estate to talk to local people about the big issues in their area. We spoke to nearly a hundred residents and the number one issue was the need for improvements to many of the properties on the estate, including kitchens, windows and bathrooms.
Councillor Adrian Garden at the Caldwell Gardens Estate on vassallview.com

That is why we are launching a new petition asking Lambeth council to bring forward its plans to invest millions of pounds improving properties across the estate.

Lambeth Labour is currently carrying out a major investment programme designed to improve housing conditions across the borough. Caldwell estate is due for its investment in 2015/16, but with your support we
want this essential work to happen earlier.

To help back our campaign you can email your name and address to vassalllabour@gmail.com or contact Cllr Adrian Garden on agarden@lambeth.gov.uk and 07814 568 024.

Thank you for your support!

The successful candidate will need to be highly motivated, efficient and demonstrate strong organisational and communications skills and have experience of working with or for community groups.

London Open Squares weekend

This weekend, 8 and 9 June 2013, is the London Open Squares weekend when a variety of community gardens and private squares around London will be open for visitors. Many Lambeth gardens will be open including Durand Gardens in Vassall Ward, Lambeth SW9.

Durand Gardens on the Open Squares website
The London Open Squares website describes the gardens: "Durand Gardens are an unusual D-shaped space in the Stockwell Park Conservation Area. The shape of the garden is said to be derived from its being the site of a plague pit. The area was developed from around 1840 to 1870. The houses were built around the garden on a pattern-book system in a wide variety of styles.

The gardens themselves were neglected for many years until the residents bought them in the 1980s. Since then they have been kept as woodland gardens and are at their best in the spring, with large displays of bluebells and daffodils. The main group of trees are limes and oaks, with a scattering of specimen trees amongst them. The central grass area is a delightful spot for a picnic.

There is now a residents' scheme to develop a wider season of plant and tree display. An exhibition will explain the history and plans for the site."
