Alternatively, Christmas trees can be dropped off at the following sites:

Also remember that during the festive period there is no limit to the amount of recycling and food waste that Lambeth residents can put out for collection: all waste left out will be collected for recycling. New parking stress consultation announced for Lambeth

Lambeth council has announced that it will launch a new 12 month parking stress consultation beginning in April 2015, which will include an examination of the area around Myatts Fields Park and surrounding streets which is currently not covered by a controlled parking zone (CPZ).

The scheme, which has been authorised by the cabinet member responsible for parking issues, Cllr Jennifer Brathwaite, will involve:

  • An examination of the key parking stress issues and overall driver behaviour in the borough
  • Gathering evidence for assessing future CPZs and how we tackle the core parking problems in Lambeth.
  • Look at how existing CPZs operate

The new consultation has been welcomed by Vassall's three Labour councillors - Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop - who said in a joint statement:

"Parking stress in parts of Vassall - especially around Myatts Fields Park, Loughborough Road and the streets surrounding both areas - has been of significant concern to many residents not least because it is one of the few neighbourhoods in our part of South London without a CPZ. The result is that residents often find it difficult to find parking spaces for their vehicles as they are taken up by commuters and this in turn leads to traffic congestion and a crowded environment for cyclists.

"We have been lobbying for these traffic problems to be looked at following our election in May, including meeting Cllr Brathwaite, Lambeth officials, residents and handing in a petition to November's council meeting from a well organised group of residents around Myatts Fields Park. It is positive news that this feedback has been taken on board and that local people will get a chance to have their say on the parking issues in their area.

"It has to be residents for to decide whether a CPZ is the right answer to the problems in the area. We will be making sure that all those living in the area have an opportunity to put across their views on this topic."

Resident's who are interested in staying in touch with the issue are being encouraged to sign up to updates via the link here.

Local councillors start campaign to return Mostyn Road to two-way traffic

Following feedback from residents throughout Vassall, the local Labour team are launching a new petition aimed at ensuring that the developers involved in the Myatt's Field North regeneration return Mostyn Road to two way traffic.

Currently, the road is operating as a one way system while the redevelopment in the area is completed, with cars not able to access Brixton Road. This was intended to be a short term measure, but local councillors are concerned it may remain in its current state. Besides making access to Myatt's Field South estate more difficult, the current flow of traffic is forcing more cars down Loughborough Road, adding to traffic jams in the area.

The petition is outlined below - anybody interested in signing the petition should email vassalllabour@gmail.com with their name and address so that they can be registered.

A full copy of the petition is below:

Petition calling for Mostyn Road to be reverted back to a two way traffic road

The current one way nature of Mostyn Road was always supposed to be a temporary measure during the regeneration and we are disappointed to learn that the developers now appear to want it to remain in this state permanently. The one way nature of the road is causing a number of problems including:

1. It is difficult for residents of Myatt’s Field South estate to access the estate properly, including carers looking after vulnerable residents on the estate and those with mobility issues.

2.Traffic attempting to access Brixton Road is being forced down the next available road, Loughborough Road, causing traffic congestion and making the road more dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians, with bikes and vehicles forced onto the pavement where the road is too narrow for two way traffic.

This petition supports the local Labour councillors – Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop – in calling for the road to be reverted back to two way as soon as possible.

Sign up to campaign to bring a new tube station to our area!

Transport for London (tfl) are currently consulting on a possible extension to the Bakerloo line which could result in a new tube station close to Vassall in nearby Camberwell - but to make this happen resident's need to show their support for this plan.

Currently, there are two options currently being considered, one as mentioned to bring the extension to our part of South London, the other to run the extension close to the Old Kent Road. While there are advantages in both proposals, local Vassall councillors have made it clear that the Camberwell option could make a significant difference to local people.

Vassall Labour Councillors - Jacqui Dyer, Annie Gallop and Paul Gadsby - said:

"Like a lot of local people I use public transport regularly and it is clear that a lot our buses and other services are incredibly over stretched. Introducing a nearby tube station would significantly help residents in Vassall and surrounding area by giving them quick access to the tube network.

"The three Labour councillors strongly support the extension through Camberwell and recently handed in a petition to Lambeth council from resident's asking it to back these proposals."

If you want to put your views across about these plans, then you can sign the online petition here (before 7 December) and most importantly send your views direct to TFL here.

New dispersal zone launched to tackle anti-social behaviour in Vassall

Lambeth council and the local police force have authorised the creation of a new dispersal zone covering parts of Vassall aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour in the area.

The new zone covers the Cowley, Myatts Field North and Church Manor estates, as well as sections of the Holland Town estate (Mandela Street, Chryssell Road, Preseverance Street and Holland Grove). Russell Grove, Cancell Road, Vassall Road and Cowley Road are also included in the zone. This dispersal area will allow local police to disperse groups of individuals they suspect of causing anti-social behaviour and allow officers to tell people who don't live in the zone to leave the area. Police can also instruct non-residents to leave for a set period (no more than 24 hours), while those under the age of 16 will not be allowed in the zone between the hours of 9pm and 6am unless they are under the effective control of a parent or responsible adult.

The creation of the zone - supported by local councillors Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop - comes after complaints of anti-social behaviour in the area over the past year from a number of residents and community groups. It will remain in place for a six month period until the 3 April 2015.

If you have any questions about the zone, please do get in touch with Vassall's local dedicated police officer, PC Louise Steedan on louise.j.steeden@met.pnn.police.uk

Lambeth Living announcement: Housing services to be moved back "in-house"

Lambeth council announced last week that housing services currently provided by Lambeth Living will be moved back "in-house" from next year.

The announcement was made by Cllr Matthew Bennett, cabinet member for housing, who said in a statement:

“Thanks to the hard work and commitment of Lambeth Living staff we’re in a good position to reconsider how housing is best managed for tenants, leaseholders and the council in the years ahead.

“There are 21,000 people on the housing list and we’re committed to improving services for tenants and leaseholders alongside ambitious plans to provide new council housing.

“We are investing a record £490m in housing to bring thousands of homes up to the Lambeth Housing Standard, have drastically reduced the number of empty properties and cut the average time to re-let empty council homes to just 12 days.

“Now is the time to build on these improvements and re-integrate housing with other council services.”

Keith Hill, former Streatham MP and chairman of the Lambeth Living Board said:

“Lambeth Living’s outgoing chief executive Neil Litherland and his staff must take credit for all they’ve achieved.

“In the current financial climate and with a very different housing landscape, it’s a wise decision to pause and reflect on whether the current set up is what’s needed for the future.”

If you are someone who recieves Lambeth Living services, you can find out more about what the changes means for you here

Local planning decisions: Saving the Grosvenor pub and neon signs for Tesco

This month has seen two thorny local issues reach Lambeth's planning committee that has resulted in a great deal of feedback to local councillors from residents:

The Grosvenor pub: Sitting just outside Vassall ward on Sidney Road, the Grosvenor pub is a popular local ale house that has managed to combine strong support for music/entertainment acts with a good relationship with residents. Last month, the new owners of the site applied for planning to convert part of the pub into flats, a move that Vassall Cllr Paul Gadsby described as "a common first step for converting good community pubs completely into flats"

As reported by Brixton Buzz, this move attracted a great deal of opposition from local people, including councillors and the Campaign for Real Ale. In good news this week, Lambeth turned down the application. However, as Cllr Paul Gadsby said: "While it is good news that this application has been knocked back, sadly the Grosvenor has in the past few weeks closed it doors after the landlord decided to call time on his tenure there. Currently, it stands empty which is a shame as it was a really vibrant part of the community. I am hoping that the owners of the site will move sharply to restore it to its proper use under a new management team."

Brixton Road's Tesco Metro: Another case before planning is an application from Tesco to put up neon signs on its outlet on Brixton Road (near Caldwell Street). Once again this has attracted concern from nearby residents as this outlet is part of an old historic building and Tesco opened under strict conditions about how the site was to be used. Vassall councillors have raised concerns about this application and are waiting for Lambeth council's decision ...

Loughborough Road meeting: Residents asked to give their views on improving their road

Following lobbying from local residents and councillors, Lambeth council has organised a special meeting on Tuesday, 2 September to look at traffic control measures along Loughborough Road on the edge of Vassall ward.

The road at the moment suffers from high levels of congestion and incidents of road rage that have been increasing in the past few years. After the lobbying from the local Labour councillors - Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop - the road and pavements will be resurfaced shortly and Mostyn Road will be going back to two way, resulting in some traffic no longer being channelled down Loughborough Road. However, as residents have made clear to the council, more needs to be done to make sure this key road is improved for local people.
The council has suggested two options aimed at improving the situation. A summary is listed below, but a fuller outline of the proposals is avaliable from Haibat Abro on habro@lambeth.go.uk
These options will be discussed at the specially arranged meeting on Tuesday, 2 September, 6.30-8.30pm, 336 Brixton Road, SW9 7AA. All residents welcome - and please do email Abro if you have any thoughts about these plans.

Option 1— New double yellow lines:

Where: Outside no. 40 to no. 46 Loughborough Road.

Benefit: Road width increased to reduce congestion and majority of the vehicles do not need to mount pavement outside no. 29.

Impact: Loss of about 6 car parking spaces while there is already a considerable pressure on parking demand.

Other considerations: The road will remain narrow when the disabled parking bay outside no. 48 is in use. We are unable to remove the disabled bay. Furthermore, this option will take longer to implement as it requires statutory consultation before implementation.

Option 2— Road widening by reducing pavement width:

Where: Pavement width reduced outside no. 29 to no. 35a Loughborough Road

The remaining pavement will still be at least 2m wide, which is wide enough to comply with Highways Agency recommendations.

Big funding boost announced for early age services in Vassall

Following lobbying by Lambeth Labour, the Big Lottery Fund has awarded a grant of £38 million to the Lambeth Early Action Partnership (LEAP) to help deliver on its mission to ensure all children in Lambeth, regardless of their background, have the best start in life. Vassall is one of the wards in Lambeth that will directly benefit from this funding.

As Lambeth Labour leader Lib Peck explained following the announcement:

“The aim of LEAP is to help ensure that all children in Lambeth, regardless of their background, from their very earliest years, have the best start in life. It aims to help improve the lives of more than 10,000 children over the course of the 10 year project.

It will use evidence-based interventions, with specific focus on three clear areas of child development: language and communication, social and emotional development and nutrition.

The work of LEAP will build on the huge progress made by Labour in terms of early intervention through the Sure Start programme, the value of which has been woefully disregarded by the current government.

However, LEAP will go even further. It will have more specific goals and will deliver more clearly measurable outcomes, such as improving breastfeeding rates, reducing childhood and maternal obesity and reducing domestic violence.

And, through linking up more tangibly with health partners, interventions can be targeted earlier and more effectively than ever.

Furthermore, the project recognises that the social, emotional, communication and language development of babies and children is affected not just by the wellbeing of their parents, but their social networks, and the strength of their communities and the wider environment too.

Intervening early to create resilient communities is a key part of our policy agenda in Lambeth. It is a fact that delivering effective early support negates the need for costly intervention later on. In our current climate of austerity, projects like LEAP simply make sense.”

Following the announcement, local Vassall councillors tabled a question at July’s council meeting asking for further details from Lambeth’s cabinet on what this will mean for the local area. The response from the cabinet member responsible for the project can be found here (question eight in the document).

Talking about the announcement, Vassall’s three Labour councillors – Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop – said:

“This is a fantastic boost following lobbying by the Labour party for the local area at a time when government cuts are continuing to bite hard. We will be making sure that this valuable money is spent in the right way so that children in our ward get the best start in life. “

Vassall Labour launches its key pledges for local area

The Vassall Labour team - Jacqui Dyer, Cllr Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop - have launched their pledges for our local area ahead of this year's council elections on Thursday, 22 May.

The team, who recently called for the Bedroom Tax to be scrapped in a letter to the South London Press, have committed to a series of campaign pledges that they will carry out if elected. These are:

1. Keeping residents safe by fighting against cuts to local policing and clamping down on irresponsible off licenses on Brixton Road.

2. Improving our community by battling for extra investment to make our roads, pavements and parks better -  following on from the successful campaign to keep the Minet library open and winning over £100,000 worth of new investment from Lambeth's Neighbourhood Enhancement Programme.

3. Campaigning for better housing conditions for local people and standing up for residents against bad private sector landlords.

These pledges form part of Lambeth Labour's manifesto for the elections, which includes a commitment to freeze council tax for a sixth successive year and giving young people the best start in life by offering free breakfasts in all of the borough's primary schools. You can read Lambeth Labour's plans here.

Talking about Labour's three candidates for the May elections, local MP Kate Hoey:

"I am pleased to give my full support to Paul, Jacqui and Annie. Jacqui and Annie are keen to build on the good work already carried out by Paul and they will be a strong team. I look forward to their election as Councillors and hope local people will support them"

If you want to show your support for Vassall and Lambeth Labour's pledges you can sign up to back them here.

Free security help to protect your bike

The local police force are hosting a special session to help improve cycle security on Friday, 4 April, between 10am and noon by the Tesco on Clapham Road.

The service offers cycle owners free registration to the bikeregister.com website and security markings which allow the bike to easily traced if stolen. This has been shown to deter thevies from taking bikes in the first place.

More roads set for resurfacing in Vassall

Over the past few years, the local Labour team have been working hard to ensure that local streets in the Vassall area get their fair share of a Lambeth programme designed to improve the borough's roads and pavements.

Already more than 2,000 potholes have been fixed since 2010 and 200 streets are set to be resurfaced this year. This large improvement programme, supported by the sale of empty council offices, has come despite the council losing half of its budget owing to cuts by the Lib Dem-Tory government; cuts supported by local Liberal Democrats.

In our area, a number of roads were resurfaced last year thanks to a campaign run by the local Labour team. This year, Welby Street and Lilford Road will see their roads resurfaced, while Loughborough Road has already had work done this year.

Thank you to all the residents who fed back to us during our roving surgeries about the issues on their roads - and rest assured we will continue to campaign for other streets to be improved in the years to come.

If you have any feedback about the issues on your street, please contact your local Labour team - Jacqui Dyer, Cllr Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop - at pgadsby@lambeth.gov.uk

Help the Little Cat Cafe reach its fundraising target

The excellent Little Cat Cafe in Myatt's Field Park is to re-open for customers on Saturday, 29 March - but it needs resident's help to raise £1,000 by Friday, 21 March to buy and install a new cooker for the grand opening.

The cafe has been a central feature of the award winning park's success over the past few years, providing high quality food and drinks, especially during the many events run on the park during the summer months. It's re-opening sees a new food manager make her debut, using food from the local greenhouse.

However, the cafe does rely on support from local volunteers and the community. To help support its food production the cafe needs a new cooker and is looking for donations of any kind to reach a fundraising target of £1,000. Even a few pounds would be hugely helpful.

If you are able to donate, visit Myatt's Field Park Project's donation here.

Clapham Road flood - update from the local Labour team

As many residents will know, Clapham Road and parts of the surrounding area suffered from flooding on Thursday night (27 February 2014) after a water pipe burst near Oval tube station.

The emergency services responded quickly and the water flow was brought under control within a few hours. According to Thames Water, the pipe was not carrying sewage as reported elsewhere, especially on Twitter ...

In the aftermath of this accident,  a number of roads remain fully or partially closed 24 hours later, resulting in some traffic problems, including heavier congestion than usual on Brixton Road and Camberwell New Road. There are currently no reports of an impact on local water supplies.

The local Labour team - Jacqui Dyer, Cllr Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop - are keen to support any residents who might have been affected by this incident and need additional help. You can contact them via Twitter or Cllr Gadsby directly at pgadsby@lambeth.gov.uk

If you experience specific problems, the below contact details could also be useful:

Lambeth publish Neighbourhood Enhancement Programme measures to make Vassall roads safer

Lambeth have released the formal proposals for improvements to Vassall Ward under the terms of the Neighbourhood Enhancement Programme.

Following on from the meetings held in July 2013 and a consultation in September and October 2013 formal proposals have been produced by the Council and now go out for consultation.

The NEP measures for Vassall Ward aim to make the area more pleasant by slowing down speeding traffic on residential roads by introducing speed humps and speed cushions.

Under the proposals speed humps will be installed on Calais Street, Cormont Road, Cramner Road, Mostyn Road, Knatchbull Road, Paulet Road. Speed cushions will be installed on Vassall Road. Waiting restrictions and no parking areas will be introduced on various roads. For full details see the traffic order linked to below.

The speed humps proposed are of the 'sinusoidal' type which offer a shallow  rise  and fall rather than a sharp bump - these should ensure that cars and other motor traffic maintains a low speed rather than speeding from hump to hump, these are also more cycle friendly than conventional speed humps. Speed cushions are proposed also to slow down traffic by forcing drivers to align their vehicle to pass smoothly over the cushion, these have the advantage of not disrupting emergency vehicles. Other NEP restrictions imposed will restrict waiting around junctions to aid pedestrian visibility.

The full traffic order is available on the Lambeth website

The measures will be introduced by the end of March 2014.
