Vassall councillors call for new pedestrian crossing needed on Brixton

Local Vassall councillors have called for the Mayor of London and Tfl to install a new pedestrian crossing on Brixton Road to help residents cross one of London's busiest roads.

The area's three Labour councillors - Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop - have launched a petition asking for the crossing to be built near Mostyn Road. This follows feedback from local people that the current number of crossings does not take into account the recent increase in the number of residents in the area following the Myatt’s Field North/Oval Quarter development. There are a number of new and existing residents with mobility issues and/or young families who are having to travel substantial distances to cross this road.

An unsuccessful application for a new crossing in 2010 identified the area as being the source of a high level of accidents and called for a crossing to "mitigate the increased demand for pedestrian movement across Brixton Road".

The councillors petition is being backed by local Assembly Member Val Shawcross.

Talking about the campaign,Vassall councillors Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop, said:

"London as a whole needs to get better at coping with the impact of new housing developments. This a classic example of where an influx of new residents means we need to look at changing the surrounding environment, in this case to protect the safety of pedestrians.

"A number of residents with young children or mobility issues have told us that they need a new crossing so that they can safely get across one of London's busiest roads. We need to ensure that vulnerable individuals and children have access to more safe crossings - and London's authorities must recognise this."

The petition can be signed here - and do get in touch with your councillors if you want paper copies to collect signatures from your neighbours.
