Vassall councillors launch road resurfacing campaign

Vassall's local Labour councillors have launched a new campaign to get Liberty Street's road and pavement in Vassall resurfaced by Lambeth council - and are asking residents elsewhere to let them know if their road is in urgent need of repair.

Lambeth has already resurfaced hundreds of roads across the borough and fixed more than 2,000 potholes since 2010, despite the Tory led government and Lib Dem backed coalition cutting the council's budget by 50%.  Local councillors - Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop - have received feedback from residents on Liberty Street that their road needs resurfacing. The councillors visited the area on Saturday to collect signatures for a petition and are asking any resident who wants to sign the petition to send their name and address to pgadsby@lambeth.gov.uk. They also want resident's in other parts of the ward to send through any suggestions they have for other road resurfacing targets to the same address.

In a joint statement, the councillors said:

"A lot of roads in the area have already benefited from Lambeth Labour's road resurfacing programme, many because of recommendations from the councillors after feedback from local people. Liberty Street is clearly in need of work and a petition will help our case to make sure it is resurfaced, but we do encourage other residents across Vassall to let us know if they feel their street needs to be worked on."

Myatt's Field North resident's association AGM this weekend

One of Vassall's most active resident's associations will be holding their Annual General Meeting (AGM) this weekend, with the event open to all those living in the area.

The Resident Association and PFI Monitoring Board (RAMB) plays a key roll in representing local resident's and scrutinising the recent housing development in the area, which encompasses the Oval Quarter. The meeting will not only elect officers from the community to represent the area for the coming year, but will also provide food and refreshments after the meeting, with music from Ninja Force Sound.

The gathering will take place at the Myatts' Field North Community Centr 24 Crawshay Road, beginning at 3pm, with festivities finishing at 9pm. All members of the community welcome, and please do contact the RAMB if you are interested in finding out more on myattsfieldnorth.ramb@gmail.com or 07415-764-35. All three of Vassall's councillors will be looking to attend the day.

New date announced for Lambeth's 2020 consultation response

Lambeth have announced a new date for the publication of the borough's response to the cultural services consultation on the future of parks and libraries in our area. The outcome will now be announced in September.

You can read more about what the consultation is looking at on a Vassall View article here and a copy of a letter local councillors sent to the South London Press about this topic here.

Talking about the consultation, Cllr Jane Edbrooke, the councillor responsible for cultural services in Lambeth, said:
“Lambeth Council’s Cabinet is scheduled to consider the outcome of the Culture 2020 consultation into the future of the borough’s parks, open spaces, libraries, archives, sports and physical activities and the arts in September.  With so much input from residents, charities and third sector organisations on the wide ranging consultation we’ve had to delay the original date of the report until after the summer holidays.
The number and quality of written responses to our three month consultation has given us a lot to consider and we need to make sure this is done properly.  We’ve had alternative proposals from a range or organisations, including our internal library service, a not-for-profit enterprise and the Save our Libraries campaign.  We want to really thoroughly look at all these options and see if they are financially viable before we make important decisions about the future of our cultural services.
The council faces a huge strain on its budget and needs to make savings of 40 per cent, worth around £4 million, from its spending on cultural services.  Of course it’s a big financial challenge, but we’re working hard to deliver the best possible service with the remaining money.  Instead of slicing away at the budget we’ve decided to look at redesigning the whole area through Culture 2020 so we can best meet community needs.
I’ve always thought Lambeth residents would come up with lots of fresh thinking to help us find a new way forward and I’m pleased to say they have delivered.”
