Vassall councillors call for tough action to tackle air pollution

Vassall councillors have called for tough action to tackle air pollution as part of their submission to Lambeth’s consultation on its new air quality action plan.

The borough is currently asking for resident’s views on how to improve air quality, with feedback being taken until 15 November. Lambeth suffers from some of the worst pollution in London, with particularly high levels of dangerous pollutants around Brixton Road and the A23 route.

Lambeth Labour has pledged to make tackling the problem a top priority, and has already improved air quality by successfully campaigning for Tfl buses with cleaner engines, taken action against car idling and improved cycling resources. The new consultation is designed to shape future improvements over the next five years.

Vassall councillors – Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop – have welcomed the proposals, especially those designed to reduce pollution from council vehicles and buildings, greater protection for green spaces and making environmental assessments a key part of future housing developments. However, the councillors have called for additional measures, including:
  • Expanded access to Santander Cycles beyond town centres, with councillors arguing that areas like Vassall should also be considered as sites for the cycle docking stations.
  • More cycle storage racks on estates, not just on residential streets.
  • Expanding car idling campaigns and monitoring to roads in suburban and outer city centre areas, like Brixton Road and Camberwell New Road.
  • More action to promote education about air quality issues in schools.

Vassall councillors – Jacqui Dyer, Paul Gadsby and Annie Gallop – said:

“Air pollution is a serious problem that has been allowed to get out of control. Thousands suffer health issues related to the levels of toxins being pumped into the atmosphere across London.

“We are pleased that Lambeth Labour and our Mayor Sadiq Khan have made tackling this problem a priority. Some important steps have already been made and we were particularly pleased that last year our campaign to get buses with cleaner engines on Brixton Road was successful.

“Lambeth’s Air Quality Action plan is an excellent document with a number of strong proposals. In our submission, we suggest further improvements. Most importantly we do need to ensure that areas like Vassall that are not designated as town centres still get the attention the residents living there deserve. We need our area to be considered for more Santender Cycles, car idling action and that estates get cycle hangers. We also need schools to be a key part of this process.

“There is still time to contribute to the consultation and we would urge all residents to do so here.”
